Overview

Caterina Sarti, una niña italiana huérfana, es acogida en adopción por la aristocrática familia de sir y lady Cheverel y enviada a Inglaterra. Allí la crían, la educan, crece junto al futuro reverendo Gilfil y se enamora del heredero de los Cheverel, Anthony Wybrow. Éste es un joven que juega con sus sentimientos, pues la hace creer que está enamorado de ella, a pesar de estar prometido con la señorita Assher. Ante los acontecimientos que se suceden, Caterina entra en un gran estado de abatimiento y tristeza, por lo que se marcha de la casa de los Cheverel sin comunicarlo previamente a nadie al ser incapaz de aguantar tanto dolor. El reverendo Gilfil, que está enamorado de Caterina, sin que ésta le corresponda, no soporta verla en ese estado y se encargará de ayudarla a superar su desesperanza.
